In its most compelling sign of resurgence since the pandemic, the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra has received the largest gift in its history: $2 million, from the Paramo family, placed directly into the orchestra's endowment.

“We were overwhelmed with the generosity of this donation,” said then Board President Dean McVay. “A gift like this will make it possible for us to positively impact more people than ever before.”

Along with its long history of music-making, the Symphony is known for collaborations with local schools and community organizations, performing free annual concerts for more than 3,000 Inland Empire students. Even during the shutdown, it delivered a full digital concert to the entire San Bernardino City Unified School District.

The gift, which carries no spending conditions, will provide roughly $100,000 each year to augment ticket income and annual giving — outpacing even the generous $1 million bequest of former board member Frank Plash in 2007.

“This gift is a major vote of confidence in the musicians of the San Bernardino Symphony, our incredible board and staff, and in the direction we're moving,” said Music Director Anthony Parnther. “Our job as an orchestra is to create beauty and share it with our community. The future is tremendously exciting.”

San Bernardino Symphony Presents an Afternoon of Cinematic and Post-Bop Jazz Featuring the Josh Nelson Ensemble

Read the release

SAN BERNARDINO, CA — On Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 3:00 p.m., the San Bernardino Symphony will proudly present the fifth annual installment of its highly acclaimed jazz ensemble concert series, featuring the Josh Nelson Ensemble. Taking place at the historic San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) Auditorium, this spectacular afternoon of live music bridges the worlds of classical presentation and modern jazz.

Launched in 2021 by San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra Music Director Anthony Parnther, this annual series ensures Inland Empire residents can experience world-class jazz and chamber performances close to home. The series' long-term sustainability was recently secured through a generous grant from the Thomas R. and Mary Ellen Brigante Trust.

The Symphony’s award-winning Resident Conductor, Raphaela Lacerda, will host the event. “After the incredible response to previous concerts, we’re thrilled to welcome back the Josh Nelson Ensemble for another unforgettable performance,” said Maestra Lacerda. “Our up-close jazz series has quickly become a highlight each season, and we’re delighted to bring it again to the stunning San Bernardino Valley College Auditorium.”

The Concert Experience: From Post-Bop to Cinematic Jazz

The afternoon’s repertoire will highlight the profound lineage of modern acoustic jazz piano mastery, balancing muscular post-bop energy with deeply emotive storytelling:

The ensemble will perform Nelson’s acclaimed original works, including "Red Car Reminiscing", "Introspection on 401", and "Spirit". These visual compositions blend ambient, modern textures with rich historical tributes, such as Southern California’s vintage transit lines.

The program will also honor the legendary innovators of jazz piano. Audiences will experience the driving, gospel-tinged hard bop of Mulgrew Miller ("Grew’s Tune", "Leilani’s Leap"), the explosive European classical romanticism of Michel Petrucciani ("Sahara", "Home"), the fierce polyrhythms of Kenny Kirkland ("Dienda"), and the modal, spiritual grooves of West Coast masters like George Cables and Mike Wofford.

Event Details and Venue Information

The concert will take place in a venue renowned for its exceptional acoustics and historic charm, making it the perfect backdrop for acoustic jazz improvisation. San Bernardino Valley College Auditorium is located at 701 S. Mt. Vernon Avenue in San Bernardino at the north end of campus facing Mt. Vernon. SB Symphony Renews Music Director Contract, Begins 97th Season with a Major Gift

Read the release

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will open their 97th performance season February 21 with the first of five performances designed by Music Director and Conductor Anthony Parnther in honor of the American Semiquincentennial.

“In 2026, we will begin with “American Voices: Lift Every Voice and Sing!” which will celebrate the musical contributions of iconic composers from classically inspired orchestral pieces to contemporary works,” explained Maestro Parnther, adding, “Then, throughout the year, we will continue to shine a spotlight on the genius of American composers.”

Parnther, who recently celebrated his sixth highly successful year with the Orchestra by signing a new three year contract, has helped to ensure the organization’s sustainability by making a personal gift of $100,000.

“My donation is given in honor of all those who value the arts in the Inland Empire to help to ensure our region can maintain the world class level of creative artistic expression it deserves. In place until we reach our historic one hundredth year, it is given as a matching gift to encourage others to support the Symphony and therefore, it is my sincere hope, inspire a more profound local culture of philanthropy,” shared Parnther.

“This is something we never could have imagined,” said Orchestra executive director Dr. Anne Viricel. “To have this type of support from an artistic leader is extremely rare in our industry; but over the past six seasons, I have learned to always expect the unexpected from Maestro Parnther. His commitment to our region is unmatched.”

The opening concert, scheduled for February 21, 2026 at 3 p.m. at the historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts, will feature repertoire by Ludwig van Beethoven, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Scott Joplin, Winton Marsalis, Florence Price, Richard Smallwood, William Grant Still and others, and will showcase the talents of vocalists Dedrick Bonner and the Singers of Soul.

Then, Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m., the Symphony will introduce the newly minted SBSO Chamber Sextet at the San Bernardino Valley College Auditorium. This new San Bernardino Symphony Chamber Ensemble, consisting of our acclaimed principal musicians, will perform a lively collection of eclectic selections including Paquito D'Rivera's Aires Tropicales and Francis Poulenc's monumental Sextet for Winds and Piano.

June 20, 2026 at 8 p.m., the Orchestra will perform their annual concert under the stars on the San Bernardino Valley College Football field as the culminating event in the institution’s annual Summerfest which brings thousands to the region. The change to mid-June from early July was in response to both College and patron concerns about safety during the arid Inland Empire weather. Concert repertoire will be a combination of patriotic and popular music and, as in years past, the event will include vendors, food trucks, a kids zone, and a fireworks finale performed during Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture.

September 5, 2025 at 3 p.m., the Symphony will reprise their popular jazz concert featuring the Josh Nelson Ensemble. Now known as the Thomas R. and Mary Ellen Brigante Jazz Performance, the result of a generous estate gift, the repertoire will include contemporary jazz pieces by Mulgrew Miller, Michael Petrucciani, Kenny Kirkland, George Cables, and Josh Nelson.

The season will conclude December 12 with a matinee performance of the Symphony’s annual holiday concert, A Christmas Festival. This festive annual event will include over 200 musicians, vocalists, dancers, acrobats, and a special performance by featured members of the two San Bernardino Symphony Youth Orchestras.

Speaking on behalf of the San Bernardino Symphony Association Board, new President Sonietta Brown shared, “We are overjoyed to unveil this amazing season made possible through the creativity and generosity of our outstanding artistic leader. I hope to see everyone in February and all throughout this historic year.”

I can guarantee it will not be what you’d expect!”

Meet the Featured Artists

Praised as “a rich-voiced mezzo” (Operawire) and “a real tour-de-force” (Splash Magazine), Mexican-American mezzo soprano Maria Dominique Lopez has sung operatic roles and symphonic works throughout the United States and Europe for over a decade. Additionally, she has recorded vocals for independent films and major motion pictures, including Golden Globe and Academy Award Winning Disney/Pixar film, “Coco,” (which she describes as her "proudest vocal achievement”) and New Line Cinema’s horror film, “The Curse of La Llorona.”

He was first introduced to Symphony audiences when he performed as part of the stellar group of vocalists at our 2023 concert under the stars. Van Gay has captivated audiences in classical and contemporary opera and concert performances with his charisma and “fine heroic tenor” (San Francisco Classical Voice). He has garnered acclaim for roles in his home of Southern California and across the United States, with Broadway World declaring, “his sound was fluent and his high notes golden,” and Voix des Arts stating, “The vitality of his work was gratifyingly unflappable.”

Hailed by Opera News as a “seemingly unlimited baritone,” International vocalist Josè Luis Maldonado, from Los Angeles attended Cal State Fullerton (BM), and Manhattan School of Music (MM); he is currently attending Michigan State University as a candidate for a doctorate in music, vocal performance. He is a career grant recipient from the Opera Buffs Inc. and Richard F. Gold Career Grant recipient from the Shoshana Foundation. He will soon make his Lincoln Center debut as Escamillo in Carmencita, an Argentinian adaptation in Spanish of Bizet’s Carmen.

Further, holding the event in a gallery without the traditional table assignments is part of our commitment to creating inviting and inclusive events to uplift and spotlight the Inland Empire growing arts scene.”

Major event sponsors include The Black Voice News, Community Hospital of San Bernardino, St. Bernardine’s Medical Center Medical Staff, and the San Bernardino City Unified School District.

SB Symphony Honors Musical Revolutionaries

Historic Concert will include two world premieres

Read the release

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Anthony Parnther, will present the second concert of its 95th season, “Revolutionaries,” on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 3 p.m. at the historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts.

Explained Maestro Parnther, "This will be an exciting and unique concert inclusive of two world premieres and some very special surprises. We will introduce the first Composer in Residence in the 95-year history of the SBSO, Dr. Fernando Arroyo, who has been commissioned to write a new symphonic poem centered around our beautiful city, San Bernardino. The title is: 'Al Pie de La Montaña,' translated to 'At the Feet of the Mountain.' It’s a retrospective of the city going through its early Indigenous roots, the mission and pioneers of the region, the 1920s and old Hollywood, the boom of the Black and Latino communities, the struggle, and a hopeful future with the idea of the mountain range and the desert as two spirits watching over the town."

Arroyo received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in Composition at the Manhattan School of and a PhD in Composition at the University of California in Los Angeles where he worked with composers Bruce Broughton, Paul Chihara, Ian Krouse and David S. Lefkowitz. His music has been performed throughout the world and ranges from solo instrumental works, chamber music and large symphonic works to film, theatre and popular music. Most recently the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra (NYC), the Southern California Viola Choir and members of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony Orchestra and Santa Barbara Symphony have performed his music. As a film composer, Arroyo wrote the music for “Any Given Tuesday”, a PSA featuring Elton John and Jamie Foxx. Recent film collaborations highlights include work on Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), Pet Fooled (2016), Survivors (2018), and Midway (2019). And, SBSO attendees may we recognize him from our string section!

Now in her second year with the SBSO, Associate Conductor Raphaela Lacerda will take to the podium conduct the Danzon no. 2 by Mexico’s most esteemed living classical composer, Arturo Márquez. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Maestra Lacerda is an accomplished conductor who has garnered recognition both in Brazil and the United States for her exceptional talent and dedication to the world of orchestral music. In 2022, Maestra Lacerda collaborated closely with the three-time Grammy-nominated American composer Miguel Del Aguila, where she conducted his composition "Toccata." Del Aguila praised her performance, noting, "The performance was very energetic as she managed to keep the rhythmic and dramatic tension of the work forward. Her interpretation was personal and showed an unusual awareness of the overall architecture of the work. (...) She has that rare quality among conductors of getting a big sound and a dramatic response from the orchestra with spare but accurate and effective movements and directions."

Danzon no. 2 is considered one of Márquez's most beautiful and evocative pieces. Born in Mexico, the composer spent his middle school and high school years in La Puente, California, where he began his musical training. After he returned to Mexico, he studied at the Conservatory of Music and the Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico, followed by private study in Paris with Jacques Castérède, and then at the California Institute of the Arts with Morton Subotnick, Stephen Mosko, Mel Powell, and James Newton.

Writes Márquez, “The idea of writing the Danzón No. 2 originated in 1993 during a trip to Malinalco with the painter Andrés Fonseca and the dancer Irene Martínez, both of whom are experts in salon dances with a special passion for the danzón, which they were able to transmit to me from the beginning, and also during later trips to Veracruz and visits to the Colonia Salon in Mexico City. From these experiences onward, I started to learn the danzón’s rhythms, its form, its melodic outline, and to listen to the old recordings by Acerina and his Danzonera Orchestra. I was fascinated and I started to understand that the apparent lightness of the danzón is only like a visiting card for a type of music full of sensuality and qualitative seriousness, a genre which old Mexican people continue to dance with a touch of nostalgia and a jubilant escape towards their own emotional world; we can fortunately still see this in the embrace between music and dance that occurs in the State of Veracruz and in the dance parlors of Mexico City. The Danzón No. 2 is a tribute to the environment that nourishes the genre... It is a very personal way of paying my respects and expressing my emotions towards truly popular music."

The SBSO is also presenting the world premiere of the Morgante Violin concerto, in dedication to trailblazing African American conductor Michael Morgan and written by Argentinian composer and double bassist Andres Martin, and dedicated to and performed by Venezuelan virtuoso violinist Samuel Vargas.

Vargas has received wide recognition for his powerful artistry and awards including First Prize of the 2021 Sphinx Competition, 2019 Yamaha Young Performing Artist, Grand Prize of the 2019 Jefferson Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, First Prize in the 2017 Atlanta’s GA Philharmonic Competition, and he was named 2014 Concertmaster Ambassador of the United Nations. Vargas holds the Pin Artistic Merits from “City Key of Prince George” and “Central Bank in Canada,” and has performed on tours in 40 countries, collaborating with acclaimed artists like Gustavo Dudamel, Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Abbado, and Christian Vasquez. He began his violinistic journey through Venezuela’s El Sistema program under the tutelage of Luis Miguel Gonzalez. In 2017, he won the prestigious Woodruff Award enabling him to study with his current mentor and professor Sergiu Schwartz at the Schwob School of Music at CSU. He is the founder and president of the Samuel Vargas International Music Foundation, an organization which is enriching communities and society through the power of classical music, emphasizing a holistic approach to music education supporting students in all areas of studies and well-being. Through his passionate work and entrepreneurship, he has founded eight active Venezuelan chamber orchestras and currently mentors young musicians in the US and South America.

"Once again, Maestro Parnther has curated a concert that will exceed expectations! This is going to be an extremely exciting afternoon of music," shared Symphony Board of Directors President Donna Marie Minano. "I cannot wait to present this masterpiece to the entire community!"

SB Symphony presents Rhapsody in Blue at 100

Historic Concert will be Performed Twice on March 2

Read the release

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will present “Rhapsody in Blue at 100” on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at 3 p.m. and at 7:30 p.m. at the historic San Bernardino Valley College Auditorium.

“George Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue celebrates its 100th birthday in 2024, and we are excited to premiere the new Gershwin Critical Edition to mark this occasion,” explained Symphony Music Director and Conductor Anthony Parnther. “Gershwin’s music, with its blend of classical, jazz, blues, and popular song requires careful editing due to varying conventions of musical notation and over time, published editions have been found to contain errors and inconsistencies. At this concert, audiences will experience Rhapsody in Blus in its most accurate representation of the creator’s vision and I cannot imagine a more appropriate pianist to premier this piece than longtime Symphony friend, Dr. David Kaplan.”

The internationally-acclaimed Kaplan has been classified as “excellent and adventurous” by the New York Times, and praised by the Boston Globe for “grace and fire” on the keyboard. He has appeared with the Britten Sinfonia at London’s Barbican and Das Sinfonie Orchester Berlin at the Philharmonic. He has also performed at the Ravinia Festival, Sarasota Opera House, Music on Main in Vancouver, Washington’s National Gallery, and New York’s Carnegie and Merkin Halls. Past San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra patrons may remember him from his masterful performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in 2021.

In addition to the Gershwin, this powerful All-American season opener also pays tribute to legendary artists like Tina Turner, Carole King, Aretha Franklin, and Simon and Garfunkel, and will feature works by William Grant Still, Valerie Coleman, and Abraham Alexander. Two outstanding vocalists will accompany the Orchestra.

“I’m excited to bring the incredible Maiya Sykes and Cedric Berry to San Bernardino. These are two of the most evocative and powerful voices I have ever worked with, both being able to sing with great conviction and command in any genre,” shared Maestro Parnther.

Maiya Sykes is a classically trained vocalist, producer, and vocal arranger. She studied independently with Nina Simone and Betty Carter. After graduating from Yale University, she went on to further her musical education at The Musicians’ Institute.

Added Parnther, “Audiences will recognize Maiya from her time as a finalist on The Voice as well as in the world-famous Postmodern Jukebox. She is legendary for her powerful and soulful presence on the mic.”

Award-winning bass-baritone Cedric Berry’s experience spans opera, Broadway, American Song Book, jazz, and gospel. He has performed with the LA Opera., Long Beach Opera, Savolinna Opera Festival of Finland, Banlieurs Bleues Festival of France, and the Ravinia Music Festival. He has appeared with the Pacific Symphony, Arizona Symphony, Santa Fe Symphony, Pasadena Pops Orchestra, California Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

“I most recently worked with Cedric Berry on Anthony Davis’s Pulitzer Prize-Winning Opera The Central Park Five and on Tamar Kali Brown’s We Hold These Truths at the Los Angeles Opera. He has garnered considerable national and international praise and it’s exciting to work together again,” expounded Parnther.

The March 2nd concerts lead off a year of exciting performances including May 25th’s “Revolutionaries” concert featuring the world premiere of Andres’ Martin’s violin concerto Morgante, a jazz retrospective of Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker on September 7th, and three of the Symphony’s most beloved events: the annual evening under the stars with fireworks “America, the Beautiful” on July 6th, the annual film and television concert, “Movies with the Maestro” on October 26th, and the annual holiday celebration, “A Christmas Festival” on December 14th.

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will present their annual evening of holiday music on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. Entitled “A Christmas Festival,” this performance will be held at the historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts in downtown San Bernardino.

Under the baton of Maestro Anthony Parnther, the concert will include a number of holiday favorites, including Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride," Randol Bass's "The Night Before Christmas," Darin Kelly's "Of Nights and Lights," Vincent Oppido's "Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus," Albert Hague's "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," and, from Home Alone, John William's "Somewhere In My Memory."

The 44-member Loma Linda Academy Pro Musica Choir directed by Kristian Leukert will accompany the Orchestra, and the audience will also take center stage in John Finnegan's "Christmas Singalong."

And as a special gift to the community, the Symphony will also perform a very historically significant piece of music.

Explained Maestro Parnther, “the great Robert Thies became the only American Pianist to win first prize in a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn’s famed triumph in Moscow in 1958. It just so happens that this year is the 100th Anniversary of the premiere of Prokofiev’s dazzling piano concerto, the very work that Robert won that competition with! It is extremely fitting to celebrate these tremendous milestones with a performance with our San Bernardino Symphony.”

Patrons, who are highly encouraged to dress in their holiday best - with nods to both black tie and ugly sweaters - will begin their festive evening even before the baton descends as the Inland Valley Repertory Theatre Carolers will be performing in the lobby.

"This is going to be the region's most musically festive evening!" shared Symphony Board President Donna Marie Minano. "We cannot wait to welcome you!"

SB Symphony presents Movies with the Maestro

Second annual cinematic concert August 12

Read the release

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will present their second annual evening of cinematic music on Saturday, August 12 at 7:30 p.m. Entitled “Movies with the Maestro,” this performance will be held at the historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts in downtown San Bernardino.

The concert will draw from an eclectic mélange of film favorites, including several pieces in which SBSO Music Director Anthony Parnther has personally participated.

"When I’m not here in San Bernardino with our world-class orchestra, I have the distinct pleasure of leading the Hollywood Studio Symphony on many of the most beloved film and television franchises on the planet," explained Parnther. "This year's Movies with the Maestro is personal. We will delve into some of the scores I led from the scoring stages of Los Angeles, London, and Nashville, including blockbuster hits like Avatar: The Way of Water, Star Wars: The Mandalorian, and Slumberland."

In addition to conducting, Parnther performs on numerous movie soundtracks. "I remain active as a recording artist in the studios, and we will also explore some of the scores I have played my bassoon on including Animaniacs and Gremlins: The Secret of Mogwai."

But that's not all. This concert will convene some of Southern California's finest musicians in a way rarely seen.

Explained Maestro Parnther, "This is a truly regional event as we are collaborating with the superstars of our Southern California cornerstone orchestras. We have invited the celebrated principal horn of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Opera, and the Principal Trumpet of the Pacific Symphony."

Parnther was recently recognized by Mark Swed, Classical Music Critic of the Los Angeles Times, who described him as "the quintessential L.A. musician of our day." Swed states, "...his technique with a baton provides complete confidence. At the same time, he indulges in robustly physical playing and riveting narrative. He enhances this by speaking engagingly to the audience, explaining why he has chosen each work and what it means to him." Further, "The effect he gets from any size group conveys the concentration that can be felt in a recording studio. There, with the pressure to produce a recording, the outer world’s distractions recede and the music dominates your full attention."

Full concert repertoire includes John Williams’ “Hooray for Hollywood” and “Born on the 4th of July”, Simon Franglen’s Suite from Avatar: The Way of Water, Pinar Toprak’s Suite from Slumberland, and Bernard Herrmann’s “Salaambo’s Aria” from Citizen Kane. Young patrons will particularly enjoy Steve and Julie Bernstein’s Suite from Animanics, John Powell’s “Poisonous Love” from Rio 2, and Jerry Goldsmith and Sherri Chung’s “Gremlins” from Gremlins: Secrets of Mogwai. Los Angeles Philharmonic Principal Horn Andrew Bain will join the Orchestra to perform Kris Bowers’ (Green Book, King Richard, and Bridgerton) Concerto for Horn which, under the baton of Maestro, Parnther, premiered in 2021 as part of the Philharmonic’s Reel Change series.

Patrons are highly encouraged to bring their light sabers to wave along to William’s “Imperial March” from Star Wars and to Ludwig Goransson and Joe Shirley’s Main Theme from Star Wars-The Mandalorian.

Second Performance Added

The August 12 concert will be reprised on Wednesday August 16 at the Henry W. Coil Sr. and Alice Edna Coil School for the Arts Auditorium to open the Association of California Symphony Orchestras 54th annual conference.
